Freddie Mac says the averagde 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 4.91 percent this week from 4.82 percenf last week. A year ago, 30-yeaer fixed-rate mortgages were averaging 6.08 While long-term rates rose this adjustablerates fell. One-year ARMs now average 4.69 percent, down from last week’ 4.82 percent. “Fixed-rate mortgages followed long-term bond yieldsd higher this week as the financial markets try to discern the stat ofthe economy,” says Frank chief executive at Freddie Mac “Housing continues to be a drag on the On Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Departmeng reported new-home sales rose 0.3 percenr in April from March.
It was the secone increase in three months. New-home sales are down 34 percentr from ayear ago. Median pricews for new homes fell 15 percentfrom year-agk levels.
